This is a small series of photos I took on a calm January night in Birmingham, Alabama.

I was on my way to the Sidewalk Cinema to watch the Golden Globes with friends, and I wanted to see what I could get right before sunset and just after.

The shopping center that is home to the movie theater and Chinese restaurant is one I pass seemingly multiple times a week. I’ve even photographed the Chinese restaurant before, albeit in the daytime.

For these photos, though, I wanted to capture the stillness and emptiness that were present. Even though a car drove up to the Chinese restaurant and ruined my perspective, I was able to catch it and the movie theater in a way that jived with my intentions.

The remaining three shots came once I had made it to the Sidewalk Cinema, and I feel they too captured an emptiness and stillness even though they were taken in downtown Birmingham.

As I walked around the Pizitz Building, the home of the Sidewalk Cinema, I noticed the framing of the alley shot with the Thomas Jefferson Tower building in the background.

That then led me to see the perspective of the pet store with the sunset behind it, and, finally, the New Ideal sign featuring the Alabama Theatre marquee in the background.

All five photos were edited based on the look of Cinestill film. While the first four have warm tones to them, I decided to go with a cooler look due to the darkness and the fact that things don’t always have to be uniform.
